Characterizing Technology's Influence on Distractive Behavior at Signalized Intersections

چکیده

Distracted driving existed since the invention of automobile; however, emergence cell phone and electronic devices created another source distraction that affected drivers visually, physically, cognitively, audibly. Many studies investigated factors influenced saturation flow startup lost time at a signalized intersection, but impact new distractions, such as in-vehicle entertainment systems, remained less investigated. This study aimed to characterize technology's influence on driver behavior intersections distractions through field test conducted three in Texas. used observational analysis hypothesis testing understand behaviors their impacts individual aggregated time. On average, 15% experienced during red indication, distracted more than 60% these drivers. However, vehicles located behind heavy vehicle an 20% were distracted, 80% phone. Statistical showed caused significantly higher headways total times non-distraction conditions. More importantly, technology-induced distraction, which significant intersection delay, was uncertain varied from event non-technology-induced delay. prevalent use phones flow, critical properly determine phase cycle lengths.

Aggressiveness propensity index for driving behavior at signalized intersections.

The development of a quantitative intersection aggressiveness propensity index (API) is described in this paper. The index is intended to capture the overall propensity for aggressive driving to be experienced at a given signalized intersection. The index is a latent quantity that can be estimated from observed environmental, situational and driving behavior variables using structural equations...

Delay Variability at Signalized Intersections

Delays that individual vehicles may experience at a signalized intersection are usually subject to large variation due to randomness of traffic arrivals and interruption caused by traffic signal control. While such variation may have important implications for the planning, design and analysis of signal controls, currently there is no analytical model available to quantify it. This paper descri...

Perception of Waiting Time at Signalized Intersections

Introduction Perceived waiting time (PWT) at signalized intersections differs from the real value of waiting time (WT), and varies with signal design. The onerousness of delay depends on the conditions under which it is experienced. Using weighted travel time may contribute to optimal signal control if its use can improve upon assuming that all time is weighted equally by users. This research e...

Angle-accident Risk at Signalized Intersections

This paper demonstrates how a new modeling methodology can be applied to intersection angle-accident risk evaluation with data collected from 81 signalized intersections in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Angle collisions between through traffic flow and opposite right-turn (please note that vehicles travel along the left side of the road in Japan) traffic flow are the second most common type at s...

Evaluation of bike boxes at signalized intersections.

This paper presents a before-after study of bike boxes at 10 signalized intersections in Portland, Oregon. The bike boxes, also known as advanced stop lines or advanced stop boxes, were installed to increase visibility of cyclists and reduce conflicts between motor vehicles and cyclists, particularly in potential "right-hook" situations. Before and after video were analyzed for seven intersecti...
